1000 Pyramid

At long last I have finished my 1000 Pyramid Quilt.  I started making it during my first quilt class ever.  It was the one that really started me in quilt making.  During the class, the teacher had said that someone from her class was inspired to make it several years ago and she just thought that was pretty neat.  I liked the idea too.  However, I knew mine was going to be a long time in the making. I wanted no repeaters.

Funny thing is that it shows the years I have been making it.  The beginning rows of triangles are a bit wonky.  And the ones that were sewn recently are laying very flat and are perfectly aligned.  It's been quite a journey. A very happy journey and of course, the journey continues.  Its such a learning process.

If you would like to make it, there are several tutorials on the web.  I used this template from Quilters Cache.  I made it a five inch triangle from tippy top point to the bottom.

Grand Illusion Mystery Quilt Finish

I like it.  I didn't last week.  I was not 100% impressed at the reveal.  I feel like I wanted to go back and rip out the seams and put sashing in.  I felt like I wanted to rework it in some way to make it less busy.  It was driving me crazy when I looked at it.  I just wanted to settle it down.  Once I put the border on I felt much better about it.  Like a 100 percent better about it.

My daughter is wild about it.  It's going to go in her room.

Now, can you tell me why I finished this and have so many other quilts that need to be finished.  Is there a WIP/UFO Challenge somewhere?

Tilted Log Cabin

I took a class a couple years ago and made this wall hanging.  Then I promptly finished it, rolled it up and stuffed it somewhere.  I did not know where it was for quite some time.  I recently found it and am thinking about putting it in my Etsy shop-  Piper's Moon

My goal for the month of September is to get my stuff pictured and posted to the shop.

I like roosters but my house does not lend itself to roosters. The name of the wall hanging is "Le Coq Torsadee"  Which in my best estimation means, "the cock dance" in French.

If you speak French let me know if that is correct or totally off...

Sweet Blue - A Log Cabin Quilt Repurposed

I inherited (is that the right word?) I ended up, no, that's not it really either.  You see my friend, Sandy's Mom passed away a few years ago.  This was before I knew her.  Her Mom, Shirley, was a quilter.  After she passed my friend, Sandy who is also a quilter went through all her unfinished projects, took what she wanted and passed the rest along.  My other friend received one of those unfinished projects. This friend, Jan or Quilting Revolution was going through her stuff and pairing down and gave me this quilt top.

The quilt is a log cabin and it was round.  Just what was I going to do with it.  It was pretty and I wanted it and I just couldn't bear cutting it.  So it has sat on my shelf for about two years.  Wow, did that time go by fast.

I was in my laundry room and there on the shelf where I keep my unfinished projects was the quilt.  It spoke to me.  I pulled it out and took it upstairs.  Putting all my other projects aside I began to work on it.  (Yes, that is how I end up with unfinished projects- but they do in fact, get done). I cut it down to a square.  It now seemed right to cut it.  It was four blocks by four blocks after cutting off the roundedness so it needed some borders.  I placed the borders on and had corners of log cabins. Funny, I had gone to a stash sale last year and picked up some older fabric.  This fabric was dated 1989 I believe so it totally worked with the fabric Shirley used.

I did it all very quickly.  I still had to finish it with a binding but I had to show my friend because I was just too excited to share it with her.

I am calling it Sweet Blue.  I will leave it up to her what she wants to put on the label.  I am done with it.  It was meant to be, I feel- just exactly like it happened.

You can go see it at my friends Sandy's blog as well- Quilting For The Rest Of Us.

Scrapitude Finish

Scrapitude Finish.  Wahoo!  Totally excited to have this beautiful, wonderful scrappy quilt finished.  I started it when our guild had a Mystery Quilt Challenge.  All scrappy.  Very scrappy.  We began in September.  I finished quilting it in March.  I think that is a record for me.  I am very happy with how it turned out.  I really wanted borders but I just couldn't find something that spoke to me so I did it as is.

Its pretty big.  It actually fits on my king size bed but it does hang over the sides.

Let's Go Antiquing

I tried many times to get a picture of this quilt that I liked but I just couldn't.  Either it was raining or it was too hot or we were busy doing stuff.  I had a limited amount of time to.  I made this for my brother and sister in law.  I actually made it for Christmas for them but I had not quilted it yet. The plan was I would send it to them,  But then there was a quilt show in my area and I decided to enter it.  Not because I thought I would win but more about getting a hand written critique of it.

I started this quilt in May of 2012.  Basically finished it one year later.  I had posted some of it here
May 2012- the start

Here it is hanging in the show.  And what a show it was.  Over 500 quilts were entered.
Then my brother and sister in law were planning to come in July, so I had to get a pic.  This one here was taken with my daughters holding up the quilt.  They are not to tall...

The quilt is called, "Let's Go Antiquing".  My brother and sister in law are into antiques and every time they visit, I can rest assured that these are the words they will say while they are here.  And really its all there fault, that I, who was never into antiques, have a collection of milk bottles!

The star block is called Sun Rays and it is combined with an Irish Chain of sorts. "The Kansas City Star published this block in 1939, and columnist Nancy Page (that is, Florence La Ganke) reintroduced it under the name Darting Minnows in 1943." (Source: Field Guide To Quilts). Most people however, will know it as Sun Rays.

The pattern I used to make this is called "Summer Dreams", by Darlene Zimmerman.  The pattern appeared in a McCalls quilt magazine in 1999.

And yes, the scalloped border was a pain in the...  It was well worth it though.  I love the look of a scalloped border.
A close up to show you the quilting.  I did freehand because that is what I like to do best.
